Hemingway’s fictional account of the Spanish Civil War. In the mountains above Segovia in North-western Spain, a guerrilla group plan to blow up a strategically crucial bridge. A young American volunteer for the republican side called Robert Jordan has been tasked with detonating the dynamite. Amid the dangers and struggles of action he finds Maria, a fugitive from Franco’s rebels. For Whom the Bell Tolls is in some ways an elegy as it reflects on the dead and the brutalities of war. But Hemingway’s sinewy novel also contemplates brotherhood and solidarity in a desolate place. This copy was published by Penguin in 1965.
